Most of us know our weaknesses precisely. We spend our energy hiding them or accommodating them. Neither is the same as being free of them.

An addiction to food, to sex, to substances, to approval — the object varies and the architecture does not. Something hurts, something reliably numbs it, and the reliability is the trap.

Concealment costs more than the weakness. I have watched patients spend twenty years of energy on a perimeter defence around something that could have been faced in eighteen months.
